did you hear that?

it was a pin.  dropping.

kiddos are in florida with their father for a long vacation.  i am trying to enjoy it, but it’s eerie.  it’s much too quiet around here, no matter how much i turn up the mason jennings.

so, i’m working hard on focusing on the positive!  i can’t get a ton done around the house, as my hand isn’t quite healed, so i’ve been working on some administrative things at work, and in the studio.

there is one project i can’t put off, which is for the wedding of my best friend in california at the end of the month.  there are two bridesmaids, and we were allowed (thank you, K!) to choose our own dresses, so they’ll be different colors and styles.  i’m working on some hairpieces to sort of help folks identify us as bridesmaids.  here’s attempt numero uno:

so, it’s really much too big, and i don’t really want to starch it, so a smaller size will help with floppage.  i used linen, tulle, and sateen fabric in white/off white for the flowers, vintage ribbon, ostrich feathers, and silk leaves, with a vintage earring as the center.

my wire wrapping leaves so much to be desired- it’s definitely better with both hands.  but, i think it turned out ok, for a prototype, and considering that i’m disabled at the moment.

positive!  things!  ra, ra!

i love eating and cooking when the kids are away.  to clarify, i sometimes love it when they’re around, too, but sometimes the rush of bedtime and the near constant interruptions quickly turn a fun hobby into a daunting chore.  so, it was great on tuesday when i headed out the the farm to pick up our csa produce and realized- hey, by jove, i can pick blackberries today!  our farm has a few you-pick-it items, black and raspberries, fresh herbs, and flowers.  we always hike up (it’s a pretty good hike, too) to the blackberry patch, but Zander can’t manage to reconcile picking only the ripe berries with staying out of the bramble.  he’s emerged looking like a veteran of some intense foreign conflict a couple of times.  so, i usually grab what i can while Sage holds Z’s hand to keep him out of the thorns, and we don’t end up with more than a few berries, enough for one bowl of cereal for each of us.  this week, i was able to buckle down, climb right into the tangled, gnarled bushes, and PICK.  for reals.  i’ve been stained purple all week, it’s great.

i got some other favorites, too, beets, garlic, purple potatoes, yellow chard, scallions, really awful looking (but super tasting) heirloom tomatoes… it’s august, hooray!  wanna come over for dinner?  you bring the wine…
